What a 3×30 paver walkway takes to build: the materials list, what fits on it, how long it takes, and what it costs installed.

- 259 6×9 pavers
- 3.3 tons of stone and sand
Materials for a 3×30 paver walkway
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Paved area | 90 sq ft | length × width |
| Pavers to order | 97 sq ft | 7% extra for cuts and breakage (259 pieces if you use a 6 × 9 in paver) |
| Base: crushed stone (2A modified / crusher run) | 2.8 tons | 6 in compacted in 2–3 in lifts |
| Bedding sand (concrete sand) | 0.5 tons | 1 in, screeded, never compacted before the pavers go down |
| Polymeric joint sand | 2 bags (50 lb) | about 60 sq ft per bag on standard joints |
| Edge restraint | 66 ft | all the way around, spiked every 12 in |
| Filter fabric under the base | 103 sq ft | keeps the base out of the soil |
| Soil dug out | 3.4 cu yd | about 9 in deep, plus room for the base to extend 6 in past the pavers |
Quantities use common rules: crushed stone at about 1.4 tons per cubic yard plus 20% for compaction, concrete sand at about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Your stone yard can convert to their product. Base depths assume normal soil in a freeze-thaw climate; soft or wet soil needs more.
Good to know
- At 3 ft wide, people walk single file. Four feet is the width most front walks should be.
- When a paver job fails, it is almost always the base, not the pavers. The stone in the list above is the part not to skimp on.

Questions
How many pavers for a 3×30 paver walkway?
Order about 97 sq ft of pavers. With a 6 × 9 in paver that is roughly 259 pieces. Larger pavers mean fewer pieces for the same square footage.
How much gravel do I need for a 3×30 paver walkway?
2.8 tons of crushed stone for the base and 0.5 tons of bedding sand. Stone is usually sold by the ton; ask the yard for 2A modified or crusher run.
How much does a 3×30 paver walkway cost installed?
We build a 3×30 paver walkway in central Pennsylvania for about $7,000 ($78 per sq ft), including excavation, base, materials and cleanup. Prices elsewhere depend on local labor and stone, so the reliable way to price it where you live is a scaled plan and two or three local bids on the same plan.
How long does it take to build?
A two- or three-person crew builds a 3×30 paver walkway in about 2 working days, most of it digging and building the base. A careful DIY build usually takes two to three times as long.
