Materials for a 14×16 paver patio
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Paved area | 224 sq ft | length × width |
| Pavers to order | 240 sq ft | 7% extra for cuts and breakage (640 pieces if you use a 6 × 9 in paver) |
| Base: crushed stone (2A modified / crusher run) | 7 tons | 6 in compacted in 2–3 in lifts |
| Bedding sand (concrete sand) | 1.1 tons | 1 in, screeded, never compacted before the pavers go down |
| Polymeric joint sand | 4 bags (50 lb) | about 60 sq ft per bag on standard joints |
| Edge restraint | 46 ft | three open sides, spiked every 12 in |
| Filter fabric under the base | 258 sq ft | keeps the base out of the soil |
| Soil dug out | 8.4 cu yd | about 9 in deep, plus room for the base to extend 6 in past the pavers |
Quantities use common rules: crushed stone at about 1.4 tons per cubic yard plus 20% for compaction, concrete sand at about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Your stone yard can convert to their product. Base depths assume normal soil in a freeze-thaw climate; soft or wet soil needs more.
Good to know
- A 14×16 fits a dining table and a conversation set, or a fire pit with chairs around it.
- When a paver job fails, it is almost always the base, not the pavers. The stone in the list above is the part not to skimp on.

Questions
How many pavers for a 14×16 paver patio?
Order about 240 sq ft of pavers. With a 6 × 9 in paver that is roughly 640 pieces. Larger pavers mean fewer pieces for the same square footage.
How much gravel do I need for a 14×16 paver patio?
7 tons of crushed stone for the base and 1.1 tons of bedding sand. Stone is usually sold by the ton; ask the yard for 2A modified or crusher run.
How much does a 14×16 paver patio cost installed?
We build a 14×16 paver patio in central Pennsylvania for about $11,400 ($51 per sq ft), including excavation, base, materials and cleanup. Prices elsewhere depend on local labor and stone, so the reliable way to price it where you live is a scaled plan and two or three local bids on the same plan.
How long does it take to build?
A two- or three-person crew builds a 14×16 paver patio in about 3 working days, most of it digging and building the base. A careful DIY build usually takes two to three times as long.
