Paver patios · State College, PA
Paver patios in State College.
We build paver patios for State College homes: a patio off the back door, a patio with a fire pit or seat wall, a raised patio on a block wall, or a hot tub patio. In our packages, the pavers go down on 1 inch of bedding sand over 6 inches of compacted stone, held by edge restraint, with polymeric sand in the joints and a pitch away from the house.

Which package fits.
The Patio is a paver patio off the back door in a running-bond or herringbone pattern, up to 180, 250 or 350 square feet.
Patio Plus gives you one built-in, either a 12 ft capped seat wall or a 44-inch paver fire pit with a steel insert, on a patio sized for 6 to 8 people. Fire Pit Lounge centers the fire pit in a round patio and curves a capped seat wall around it.
The Outdoor Room puts the patio, a 16 ft seat wall, the fire pit and six low-voltage LED fixtures together. Our main paver patio page has more on patio options and steps.

Where a patio fits on a State College lot.
Before you settle on a size, look at what’s around the spot. Utility easements, lot coverage limits and stormwater rules can all bear on where a patio goes and how big it gets.
If you have a survey or plat that shows your easements, have it handy at the site walk. Our patio size guide and patio slope guide help with the rest.

Patio rules in State College and nearby.
From the Borough code and nearby townships. Check with the office for your address before you pick a size.
Utility easements
State College Borough zoning keeps structures, fences and any planting other than grass or similar ground cover out of utility easements, and that rule overrides the normal setbacks.
Borough stormwater
Projects with impervious coverage under 10% of the site, up to 2,500 square feet, are exempt from the Borough’s recharge and water-quality volume requirements. Runoff still has to leave the site safely.
Harris Township stormwater
Harris Township, which takes in most of Boalsburg, exempts projects under 10% of the site and up to 5,000 square feet of impervious area from filing a stormwater site plan. Runoff must still be conveyed safely.
Lot coverage
Centre Hall’s maximum lot coverage counts the house and accessory structures plus surfaces water can’t soak through, such as driveways and pools.
Low ground
Low spots around Boalsburg include Chagrin soils, rated for occasional flooding, and Nolin soils, rated for rare flooding. Check those spots before setting a patio or parking pad.
Rules change. Check with the township or borough before you plan around them; we go over what we know at the site walk.
Raised patios on a sloped yard.
On a sloped yard, a patio can sit level on a segmental block wall. One State College example is our backyard patio and retaining wall project.
Underneath, the wall is built like any of our retaining walls: drainage stone, fabric and perforated pipe go behind the block, and geogrid goes in where the height calls for it. Our State College retaining wall page has the full spec and local soil notes.

Questions.
How much does a paver patio cost in State College?
Each patio package has a State College page that shows its price, and we confirm it with you on a free 15-minute site walk. If you want something outside the packages, we price it in writing after measuring the yard with you.
My yard slopes away from the house. Can I still have a patio?
Yes. On a sloped lot the patio can be raised and held level by a segmental block retaining wall, or stepped down from the back door; the Outdoor Room package includes those steps when the grade calls for it. We look at the slope with you at the site walk.
Do State College stormwater rules apply to a new patio?
The Borough exempts small projects, measured by impervious coverage as a share of the site with a 2,500-square-foot cap, from its recharge and water-quality volume rules. Whether yours qualifies depends partly on your lot size, so ask the Borough how your patio counts before choosing a size.
What paver patterns can I pick?
The Patio package comes in running bond or herringbone. A pattern the package doesn’t list is priced as a custom patio after a free estimate.
What’s included beyond the patio itself?
Beds, lawn repair and grading past the patio edge come with the job only when the contract lists them. We’ll also need water and electricity at the house during the build.
