Hardscaping in Williamsport: patios, walls and walks.

We build hardscaping in Williamsport and nearby Lycoming County towns: paver patios and the block walls under them, front walks and steps, fire pits and seat walls, and paver parking pads. Our own crews do the digging, base, block and paver work, so a patio, the wall under it and the steps beside it are one project.

How the pieces fit together.

A patio on a sloped yard usually needs a wall to sit on and steps to reach it. A front walk along the house often needs a low wall to hold the bed beside it.

Because our crews handle the excavation, wall and paver work themselves, we price and build those pieces as one project under one contract. Our hardscaping overview covers everything we build across our service area, and the paver walkway and steps in Northumberland shows one of those jobs.

If you want shade over the table, the Pergola Patio for Williamsport adds a stained, pressure-treated 6×6 pergola on footers over the dining end of a paver patio.

Steps and walls on sloped lots.

On a hill, a usable patio or path starts with cutting the grade. We do that with our own mini excavator and skid steers, then set block walls on a buried base course and build paver steps between the levels.

A steep bank can also be split into two terraces, with the upper wall set back from the lower one. Soil, slope and wall-permit notes for the area are on our Williamsport retaining wall page.

Snow, freezing nights and where walls can go.

Weather decides how hardscape has to be built here, and town rules decide where it can go.

Snow and freezing nights

The National Weather Service’s Williamsport station averages 35.8 inches of snow and about 122 nights at or below freezing a year, based on 1991 to 2020 normals.

Steps and terraces in Hughesville

Hughesville’s zoning ordinance exempts landscaping, land terraces, steps and similar features from a zoning permit, unless the work is in a floodplain district.

Corner lots in Muncy

In Muncy, nothing taller than 42 inches, a wall included, may sit inside the clear sight triangle near street and alley intersections. The triangle runs 30 feet from where the centerlines of two local streets meet.

Walls near property lines

In Hughesville, fences and walls in required yards are capped at 6 feet and must sit at least 2 feet off property lines and street or alley rights-of-way, unless the neighbors give written consent to build on the line.

Rules change. Check with the township or borough before you plan around them; we go over what we know at the site walk.

Built for freeze and thaw.

Water that gets under a patio or behind a wall freezes and expands again and again through a Williamsport winter. That is what heaves pavers and pushes walls out of line.

So the base and the drainage do the real work. Our patio packages get a 6-inch compacted stone base under the bedding sand and a surface that sheds water away from the house, and our wall packages have drainage stone and fabric behind the block. Our guide to pavers heaving in winter walks through why it happens.

Full build details are on our paver patio and retaining wall pages, and patio sizes for Williamsport lots are on the Williamsport paver patio page.

What to expect on build days.

A few things are the same on every job.

  • Utility lines get marked first: we place the PA One Call (811) request before digging, as state law requires.
  • We’ll need access to water and electricity while the crew works.
  • Every machine in the yard is ours: a mini excavator, skid steers, trucks and dump trailers. We rent something bigger only for the jobs that need it.
  • Planting, lawn repair and grading past the edges of the work are extras, and they’re part of the job only when the contract lists them.
  • If the town requires a permit, you get it and pay the fee. We pass along what we know about it when we walk the site.

Questions.

Can you build a patio and a retaining wall as one project?

Yes. Our crews do the excavation, wall and paver work, so a raised patio on a block wall is one contract and one crew schedule. Packages like Patio Plus and The Outdoor Room already combine a patio with a seat wall, a fire pit or both.

Do steps and terraces need a zoning permit?

It depends on the town. Hughesville exempts landscaping, land terraces and steps from a zoning permit outside its floodplain district, while Montoursville requires a zoning permit for all types of construction. Check with your municipal office before work starts.

Can I build a low wall near the street on a corner lot?

Check the sight-triangle rule first. In Muncy, nothing over 42 inches tall may sit inside the clear sight triangle at street and alley intersections, and Hughesville has its own sight-triangle limits. Plan the wall’s height and position around that rule.

Do you build paver parking pads?

Yes. The Paver Parking Pad package puts vehicle-rated pavers on a compacted stone base 10 inches or deeper, held by a concrete edge and pitched so water runs off. It comes in three sizes: one car, two cars, or three cars or a driveway apron.
