A fire pit patio that fits every chair

The most common fire pit mistake is a patio too small for the chairs, so people end up with their back legs in the grass. Size yours below, then let us draw the full plan: pit, seating ring, clearances, base and the path from the house.

How many people around the fire?

What kind of seats?

–Round patio diameter
–Patio area
–Fire pit size
–Pit center to chair front

Planning sizes for a round patio. Your plan adjusts for your yard, slope, house and the path to it.

What your plan settles

Where it goes

Distance from the house, deck, trees and property line, downwind of where you sit most, on ground that drains. Many towns set a minimum distance from structures, so we plan to your local rule.

Wood or gas

A wood pit wants open sky and room for smoke. Gas needs a line run and a shutoff. We lay out either, and leave the gas work to a licensed fitter.

The build

Pit size and block, a fire-safe liner, the paver or stone patio and its compacted base, a seat wall if you want one, and lighting.

Clearances, seat ring and the pit build

The tool above gets the chairs right. These are the other numbers a fire pit plan has to carry, and where each one comes from. The distances below come from the International Fire Code (IFC 307), which many towns adopt. Local rules vary: your township or fire marshal decides which code applies and can amend it, so read this as what the model code text says, not as your town’s rule.

What the fire code text says

TopicWhat the text saysSection
Recreational (wood) fireNot within 25 ft of a structure or combustible material. Anything that could carry fire within 25 ft is removed before lighting.IFC 307.4.2
Size of a recreational fireFuel area 3 ft or less across and 2 ft or less high.IFC definition / 307.4.2
Portable outdoor fireplaceUsed per the maker’s instructions and not within 15 ft of a structure or combustible material. The model text exempts one- and two-family homes.IFC 307.4.3
AttendanceConstantly attended until the fire is out.IFC 307.5
Putting it outAt least one 4-A portable extinguisher, or other approved means such as dirt, sand, a water barrel or a garden hose, ready to use.IFC 307.5

Local versions differ. Ohio’s state fire code, for example, sets 15 ft from a structure for gas-fired recreational pits. That is why your plan starts from your local rule. Our fire pit distance guide walks through the 10, 15 and 25 ft numbers in more detail.

Gas pits follow the appliance

The product standard for gas fire pits is ANSI Z21.97, which covers outdoor decorative gas appliances. Clearances for a gas unit come from its installation manual, so the plan is drawn around the model you choose. The gas line itself goes to a licensed fitter.

Seat ring, wind and smoke

Wood: 3 ft

Unilock’s fire pit guide puts chairs and benches at least 3 ft from a wood-burning pit.

Gas: 2 ft

The same guide puts chairs at least 2 ft from a gas pit.

Windy: 7 ft

In wind it recommends at least 7 ft. Cedar and pine throw more sparks, so seats go farther back.

Smoke follows the wind. The plan keeps the most-used seats, the back door and open windows out of the path the smoke takes on a typical evening at your house, and keeps the pit out from under overhanging branches. If you want built-in seating, our seat wall dimensions guide covers height and depth.

Base and liner

Kit instructions show what a sound pit build looks like. Cambridge’s Omega fire pit kit calls for digging 4 in., compacting the soil, then adding 3 in. of 3/4-in. quarry process stone, compacted and leveled. Polycor’s granite fire pit guide calls for a circle at least 6 in. deep, a center hole about 12 in. across and 24 in. deep filled with crushed stone for drainage, and a metal fire ring set tight inside the block. Polycor also warns that large fires and intense heat can make the block spall or crack. That is why the plan calls for a steel ring or liner rather than bare block facing the fire.

Send us these with your photos

  • Your town, and what the fire marshal or code office told you about distances.
  • The house, deck, shed, wood fence, woodpile and property line on your sketch.
  • Any tree whose branches reach over the spot.
  • Which way the wind usually blows on summer evenings.
  • Wood or gas. For gas, the model you want, so its manual sets the clearances.
  • Where a hose, bucket or extinguisher can live within reach of the pit.

Questions

How big should a fire pit patio be?

For four to six people in Adirondack chairs, plan on roughly an 18 ft round patio. Larger groups and deeper chairs push it to 20–22 ft. Use the tool above for your count, then see the full 18 ft fire pit patio breakdown.

How far should a fire pit be from the house?

It depends on your town’s fire code and the pit type. Many places call for somewhere around 10 to 25 ft from structures for wood fires. Check your local rule; we draw to it.

Can a fire pit sit on pavers?

Yes, with a proper insert or liner and the right pit build. Read can you put a fire pit on pavers for what holds up and what cracks.

Can I build it myself from the plan?

Yes. The plan includes a material list with quantities, so you can buy and build, or hand it to any local contractor to price line by line.

Does a gas fire pit need to be 25 ft from the house?

Not always. A gas unit comes with clearances in its installation manual, and some states set their own number: Ohio’s fire code sets 15 ft from a structure for gas-fired recreational pits. Ask your fire official which rule applies to you.

How far should chairs be from a fire pit?

Unilock’s guide puts chairs at least 3 ft from a wood-burning pit and at least 2 ft from a gas pit, and at least 7 ft back in windy weather.

What goes under a backyard fire pit?

A compacted stone base. Cambridge’s kit instructions call for 4 in. of excavation and 3 in. of compacted 3/4-in. quarry process stone; Polycor’s guide adds a crushed-stone drainage hole in the center and a metal fire ring inside the block.
